Ditch the Diet Mentality

 In Uncategorized

Today’s weight loss strategies are almost 100% ineffective.

Approximately 96-99% of all people who lose weight on a weight loss diet gain it back within 1-2 years.  This may leave you feeling stuck. Doomed to a life of lack of self control and weight gain if you take the dieting wheels off and doomed to unhappiness and a broken metabolism if you continue to diet. So, what do you do if you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t diet?

Ditch the Diets

First, we need to explore the reasons why dieting does NOT work so that we don’t fall into its common traps. From slowing down your metabolism (and actually causing weight gain!) to increasing your chances for an eating disorder, there are a multitude of reasons to ditch the diet mentality.  Check out our twelve favorites here.

It’s also essential to understand that there is no one-size fits all way to eat.  There’s a reason why your best friend dropped 50 pounds doing the Grapefruit Diet but you gained 10.  Yes, we’re all human but is there such a thing as the optimal human diet?  Read on to find out!

Can I Really Make a Change?

And in case you think that not dieting will send you into a tailspin where you land in a pint of Ben & Jerry’s every night, we’ve got good news for you.  It just so happens that a non-dieting approach called Intuitive Eating, is the most effective and lasting nutritional approach to health. A meta-analysis published in 2016 reviewed 24 studies and found that Intuitive Eating was associated with a number of benefits:

  • Greater body appreciation and satisfaction
  • Positive emotional functioning
  • Greater life satisfaction
  • Unconditional self-regard and optimism
  • Psychological hardiness
  • Greater motivation to exercise when focus is on enjoyment rather than guilt or appearance

There’s a reason why so many health and wellness experts are embracing Intuitive Eating.  Like you, they’re “sick of the shame and fear around food, and of failure in front of the near-insurmountable odds of long-term weight loss”.  To learn more about what Intuitive Eating is, and what it is not, check out this great overview and go to the source itself!
